Owner and "wine guy," Clelland Johnson, is on hand to help you match right beverages to your meal or event to create a delightful lifestyle experience.
Clelland has always had an interest in wine, having taken wine courses since the 1980s. When he heard a local liquor store was for sale, he decided to become a refugee from management consulting and the financial services industry to make his avocation and love for wine, ales, and spirits, his vocation.
Since 2004, Clelland has enhanced his knowledge of wine and spirits by studying at Johnson & Wales, the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center at Boston University, the UK's Wine & Spirits Education Trust, and Scotland's Moray College. He now holds the WSET Advanced Certificate in Wine & Spirits and is a candidate for the Diploma in Wine & Spirits. "Wine is a fascinating study," he says "that runs the gamut from gastronomy, to history and geography, to chemistry, geology, and meteorology; and, even to economics and politics. It never ends."
Under Clelland's guidance, Hopkinton Wine & Spirits has expanded the store's wine selections to include wines from more new and interesting wine producing regions, as well as, considerably increased the number of more affordable wines, while also growing the store's selection of fine wines and Ports. In addition, the selections of single malt whiskys, small batch bourbons, Cognac and Armagnac, and imported cordials have grown along with those of imported beers and ales. Clelland has also brought in products to enhance the enjoyment of the wines, ales, and spirits, including cheeses, pâtés, meats, and other specialty and gourmet foods, and wine and cocktail educational aids and accessories. While enhancing the store's product selection, Clelland has also drastically reduced prices for spirits, in particular, and other products as well. Finally, Clelland strives to make Hopkinton Wine & Spirits an inviting and "friendly place." And, so it is.
Clelland lives in Hopkinton with his family. When he's not in the store, Clelland is usually coaching one of his daughters' softball teams, or attending one of their other sporting events.
